UMKC Track and Field: Frerichs Named CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American‏

UMKC track and field’s Courtney Frerich’s was named as one of 15 members to the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country First Team at the Division I level, CoSIDA announced today.

Frerichs, who recently finished second at the NCAA Championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a school record time of 9:31.35, the fourth fastest in NCAA history, was named to the team after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.93 as a chemistry major.

Earlier this season, Frerichs helped the ‘Roos to the WAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship by winning the individual titles in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meter run. This season, she is a three-time All-American, garnering honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, giving her five All-American honors in her career.

The Nixa, Mo., native becomes just the ninth ‘Roo to earn a spot on one of the three teams and just the fourth to be named first team joining women’s basketball’s Eilise O’Connor (1st Team – 2014) and track & field’s Sonya Ahmed (3rd Team – At-Large, 1st Team – 2002) and Jon Kelley (1st Team – 2003). Other ‘Roos to earn a spot include men’s soccer player Garret Guthrie (3rd Team – 2008), softball’s Kristen Caldwell (3rd Team – 2004) and Kaelene Curry (2nd Team 2011 & 2012) and Track & Field’s Sara Hiller (2nd Team – 2008, 3rd Team – 2007 & 2009) and Maggie Brueggeman-Butler (2nd Team – 2006).

Frerichs will be in action again tonight when she runs at the USATF Championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
