The UMKC men’s and women’s track and field teams each finished in fourth-place at the Herm Wilson Invitational in Wichita, Kansas, with a number of ‘Roos posting personal records, and seniors Blake Hocking and Veronica Rollins earning first-place marks in the process.
Sophomore Jeremy Harr put up a career-best mark in the triple jump on Friday, taking third-place with a jump of 14.51 meters. The leap is now the best mark in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) this season.
Kelsey Benoit posted a personal-best in the weight throw on the opening day of the meet, taking second-place with a throw of 16.70 meters, good for third on the WAC performance list this season.
Hocking showed why he is the defending WAC shot put champion, posting a season-best throw of 16.70 meters to win the event and move into first on the conference performance list.
The women’s 60-meter hurdles saw two ‘Roos come out of the preliminary round to make it to the finals, junior Mallory Short and senior Sydia Darker. Short ran a time of 8.86 seconds to place second in her heat and second overall in the prelims, while Darker finished ninth overall with a time of 9.02 seconds. In the finals, Short matched her season-best at 8.77 seconds (second in the WAC), to take second, and Darker took sixth with a time of 8.94 seconds.
Freshman Chadayne Walker continues to improve with every meet, posting a 6.91 second 60-meter dash time in the prelims, placing second in the prelims, before running a slightly-slower finals time of 6.92 seconds for fourth in the event. His preliminary round time has him in third-place in the current WAC performance lists.
One meet removed from setting a personal-best time in the 800 meters and moving up the UMKC records to third-place all time in the event, Rollins one-upped herself by resetting her personal-best with a time of 2:14.45 seconds, scratching more than a second off her previous best. The time moved her into second-place in the ‘Roos record books, and first in the WAC this season.
Sarah Fogarty finished the 3,000 meters in second-place, crushing her previous career-best time of 10:03.98 by nearly 10 seconds, with a time of 10:03.98. Fogarty now sits in second by just one second on the WAC performance list in the event.
Chandler Carreon also set a personal-best in the 3,000 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 10:10.79, nearly seven seconds faster that her prior best.
The ‘Roos relay teams closed out the meet with solid performances, with the women’s team taking third and the men finishing in fourth.
Next on the schedule for UMKC is the Nebraska Tune-Up on February 19, the last meet before the WAC Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho on February 25-27.
