UMKC SB: ‘Roos Sweep Redhawks with 6-4 Victory on Saturday
The UMKC softball team completed a three-game series sweep of Seattle, winning 6-4 on Saturday, April 23 at Logan Field in Seattle, Washington. With the victory, the ‘Roos are winners of four straight, and 13 of their last 15 contests.
The ‘Roos (21-19, 10-2 WAC) pounced on Seattle U early (15-30, 1-11 WAC) with an RBI single up the middle off the bat of sophomore Kendra Leach (3-for-4), driving in sophomore Kelsey Goodwin (1-for-3) who led off the inning with a ground-rule double.
The Redhawks retied the ballgame in the third inning with two hits off sophomore pitcher Amber Grove (12-8), but the ‘Roos pushed another run across the plate in the fourth and two more in the fifth to regain the lead and the momentum.
Good fortune aided the ‘Roos with the fourth-inning run, as it came on an error by Seattle’s catcher, and another unearned run in the fifth made things easier for UMKC, and Leach added insult to injury with her second RBI of the game to give the ‘Roos a 4-1 lead after four-and-a-half innings of play.
Grove stayed solid in the circle and despite not striking out a single Seattle batter held them to just one run going into the final inning.
UMKC added two insurance runs in the seventh with a two-RBI single up the middle from Senior Alexandra Friloux (1-for-3) and looked to have put the game away with a 6-1 lead and just three outs to go, but the Redhawks had other ideas.
Seattle was able to scratch three runs across the board with an RBI infield single and a two-run home run to make the ‘Roos sweat, but Grove was able to pick up the complete game and end it by inducing a routine groundout to shortstop.
UMKC finishes off the regular season with an eight-game home stand, starting with a three-game series against New Mexico State to finish off the Western Athletic Conference regular season slate. The ‘Roos and the Aggies will square off in a doubleheader on April 29, and will conclude the series on Saturday, April 30.
