The UMKC women’s soccer team closed out the regular season with an 8-0 victory over Chicago State in a rain-drenched match on Saturday afternoon at Ray and Joan Kroc Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.
With a downpour the entire match, the ‘Roos (13-5-1, 7-2-1 WAC) didn’t let the elements affect them. They took control from the beginning of the match and, like the rain, didn’t let up the entire 90 minutes.
First to score for the ‘Roos was junior Emily Herndon, who put her third goal of the season in off an assist from freshman Reighan Childers in the 12th minute. The goal was Herndon’s 14th of her career, and Childers’ sixth assist of the season.
Next in line for the goal-scorers was freshman Kelsey Mothershead, who scored in the 20th minute. Mothershead converted the goal, her fifth of the season, thanks to an assist from fellow freshman Lexie Howard.
One minute later, Mothershead assisted on a goal by sophomore Maureen Bigsby, the third of the half for the ‘Roos.
Sydni Young connected on a pass to Nikki Lynch to convert goal number four in the 26th minute, then in the 30th minute Childers found Howard to cap the first half with a 5-0 lead.
In the second half, head coach Chris Cissell sat his starters and went to his reserves. The reserves went on to win the second half 3-0, to finish off the game with an 8-0 ‘Roos victory.
Ryann Burnett, Whitney Lucas and Natalie Righetti all scored goals, with Lucas assisting on the two goals she didn’t score in the half.
The ‘Roos will play in the WAC Conference tournament in Bakersfield, California on Thursday, November 5. UMKC will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will play at 6 p.m. CT at the Main Soccer Field on the CSU Bakersfield campus.
