Airam Castellano has been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s tennis Athlete of the Week for April 13-19. It was his fourth such honor from the league this season.
Castellano, a freshman from Gran Canaria, Spain (IES Perez Galdos), helped the ‘Roos climb over .500 at 12-11 to end the regular season with a 6-1 win over the No. 19 NCAA-II team in the nation, Northwest Missouri State. He finished the regular season with a record-setting day in a singles win over a nationally ranked NCAA-II player, No. 34 Romain Boissinot of Northwest Missouri State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. It was his 19th win of the season, tying Grant Fleming for the school record for wins in a year at UMKC. In doubles play with partner Mike Psarros, they defeated Boissinot and Alvaro Riveros by an 8-4 score.
UMKC will be the No. 3 seed and face second-seeded Texas-Pan American on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the WAC Tournament semifinals at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City.
