Three ‘Roos Pick Up WAC Track & Field Athlete of the Week Honors

The The Western Athletic Conference announced the winners of the weekly track and field awards for February 15-21 on Tuesday, with three UMKC athletes earning honors, including junior sprinter Mallory Short, and senior throwers Kelsey Benoit and Blake Hocking.

Short, a junior from Columbia, Missouri (Rock Bridge HS) took fourth-place in the 60-meter hurdles at the Nebraska Tune-Up on February 19. Short’s time of 8.75 seconds was a season-best and places her second in the WAC standings heading into the conference championships.

Benoit, a senior from Centralia, Missouri (Centralia HS) placed first among Division I competition in the weight throw at the Nebraska Tune-Up on February 19. Benoit’s winning toss of 17.29 meters proved to be a career-best mark, and places her third in the WAC this season in the event.

Hocking, a senior from Lawrence, Kansas (Lawrence HS) took first-place in the shot put at the Nebraska Tune-Up on February 19. Hocking’s winning mark of 16.99 meters proved to be a season-best, and places him atop the WAC performance list in the event.

The three ‘Roos have each earned one weekly honor previously this year, bringing the total weekly award count for UMKC to eight.

UMKC takes on the WAC in the indoor conference championships, February 25-27 in Nampa, Idaho.
