Zach Nelson has been named as the new Head Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach and Program Director at MVC. With over six years of experience at the high school level, Coach Nelson has worked with Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams, making him a valuable addition to the Mustangs.

Coach Nelson’s coaching career began in 2017 when he served as the Head Freshmen and Varsity Assistant at Rockhurst High School. He then transitioned to the Head Varsity Assistant Coach from 2019-2021. From 2021-2023, Coach Nelson was the Head Junior Varsity and Varsity Assistant at Jesuit High School in Sacramento. In addition to his high school coaching experience, Coach Nelson was a Junior NBA Coach for the Sacramento Kings.

Having played high school basketball in Missouri and winning a State Championship in 2013, Coach Nelson is no stranger to basketball. He went on to play at Westminster College of Missouri, where he made two Division 3 NCAA Tournament appearances.

“I want to thank God for guiding me down this path that led to MVC, without him, this wouldn’t be possible,” says Coach Nelson. “I am excited to join the MVC family and to have the opportunity to shape these student-athletes for the greater glory of God. I can’t wait to bring a fun and exciting brand of basketball to the athletic program. Go Mustangs!”

Matt Coleman, MVC’s Director of Athletics, is equally excited about Coach Nelson’s appointment. “Coach Nelson brings enthusiasm, a strong basketball background with experience at coaching at various levels that will translate well at MVC. We are thrilled to have him join our community and can’t wait to see him build our girls’ basketball program to a championship level.”

We look forward to seeing Coach Nelson lead the Mustangs to success both on and off the court. Congratulations, Coach Nelson, and welcome to the MVC family!
