Head Coach Christi Posey and UMKC volleyball announced their 2016 schedule today with power five schools Arkansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma highlighting the slate.
“With the expectation of the WAC being even more competitive than in years past, we needed to challenge our team early in the season by playing a tougher pre-conference schedule,” Posey said. “Tournaments at Oklahoma and Arkansas allow us to see some BCS opponents, while the Omaha Classic over the second weekend provides exceptional competition by playing teams from the top of the Summit League in UNO and South Dakota.”
The ‘Roos open the 2016 campaign on Aug. 26-27 at the Oklahoma Invitational against Oral Roberts, UTSA and Oklahoma before taking part in the Omaha Classic a week later. In the Classic, UMKC will take on South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., on Sep. 1, while facing off against Abilene Christian, Drake and Omaha in Nebraska.
The following week, the Kangaroos return to Kansas City for their home opener and the Kangaroo Klassic. UMKC opens the event on Sep. 9 against Cornell and rounds out its tournament slate with Northern Iowa and Bradley.
“Our own Kangaroo Klassic will be highly competitive, as we host Missouri Valley foes Northern Iowa and Bradley, along with Cornell from the Ivy League,” Posey added. “Our pre-season goals, as always, are to prepare well for the conference season and put our team in the best place to contend for a WAC championship and WAC tournament championship.”
A trip to Fayetteville, Ark., on Sep. 16-17 for the Arkansas Invitational and matches with the Wildcats, Razorbacks and Southern Miss await the ‘Roos in their final nonconference matches of the season.
The WAC schedule begins with a trio of road contests, including at Chicago State (9/23), Seattle (/29) and Utah Valley (10/1) before the conference home opening weekend against Bakersfield and Grand Canyon on Oct. 6 and Oct. 8.
Kansas City then closes out the first half of the WAC season on the road at New Mexico State and UTRGV, while the second half gets underway when the Cougars, Wolverines and Redhawks make their return trips to the Fountain City at the end of October.
UMKC makes its final road trip of the season on Nov. 3-5 when they take on Grand Canyon in Phoenix and Bakersfield in California, before returning home for their final two regular season matches against UTRGV on Nov. 10 and New Mexico State on Nov. 12.
The WAC Championship will take place on Nov. 17-19 in Las Cruces, N.M., with the winner of the event receiving and automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
