UMKC volleyball hit .308, led by Madison Mosier and Sydney Crimmins, who hit .500 and .462, respectively, leading to a 3-0 sweep of Grand Canyon on Thursday night at the Swinney Recreation Center in WAC action.
Crimmins paced the ‘Roos, who improved to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference, with 12 kills and 12 digs for her team-leading sixth double-double of the season, while Mosier finished with 11 kills in the win.
Grand Canyon, meanwhile, falls to 3-15 on the season and 1-5 in the WAC.
Early in the opening set, the two squads were tied at 8-8, before a 7-0 rally by the ‘Roos, featuring three Mosier kills, gave UMKC a 15-8 advantage. The Kangaroos would go on to stretch the lead to as many as 10 on four separate occasions, including the final margin when one of Jessica Hendin’s seven kills gave UMKC a 25-15 win.
Set two again featured a tie early in the game, this time at 9-9. Once again, the ‘Roos would rally as they used a 9-2 run, capped by an ace from Meagan Kerns and another Mosier kill, to go up 18-11. GCU managed to trim the lead to only six the rest of the set, before kills from Kerns and Crimmins gave UMKC a 25-17 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
In the final set, the Lopes stayed close throughout the match, trailing by just two late at 20-18. At that point, however, UMKC ended the match with the final five points with a kill from Crimmins and one of Skyler Muff’s eight kills capping the contest with the ‘Roos taking the final set 25-18.
For the ‘Roos, Kaylyn Brandt had 25 assists and seven digs and Taryn Miller led the defensive effort with a team-high 16 digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they take on Bakersfield at 2 p.m. at the SRC.
