Wisconsin players Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes had barely settled into their seats in the interview room in Los Angeles on Wednesday when the moderator asked the trio if they had anything to say to the stenographer to start things off.
In an attempt to stump Debra Bolling, Hayes piped up with the word “Syzygy.”
Bolling’s bright red stenography machine stood out from the usual black boxes used by the people who produce the news conference transcripts for the media during the NCAA tournament.
Hayes looked down from his perch high atop the podium and in a stage whisper said, “She’s so beautiful.”
He was stunned when he realized the entire room and everyone watching the televised session had heard him.
Bolling laughed it off later, saying, “That was pretty funny obviously.”
Last week, the Wisconsin players took a particular interest in how the machines work and even punched the keys with odd symbols on them.
