TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — J.D. Weatherspoon had 17 points and Toledo snapped Akron’s four-game winning streak with an 84-67 victory on Friday night.
Toledo (9-6, 1-1) bounced back from losing its Mid-American opener by shooting 9 of 11 from 3-point range. The Rockets led by six when Nathan Boothe made a 3 and Kurt Hall a layup on consecutive possessions to extend the lead to 66-55 with 7:35 left.
Nyles Evans ended that run with a quick layup for Akron (10-5, 1-1) but fouled out on a technical for handling the ball after his made basket. He led Akron with 13 points and the Zips would get no closer after he left the game.
Toledo closed the first half with a 9-2 run to push ahead 37-34 and opened the second with six straight for a nine-point lead.
Jonathan Williams had 15 points, Julius Brown added 14 and Justin Drummond 13 for Toledo.
