The winningest regular season in program history concluded with an explosion on Sunday afternoon as the UMKC women’s soccer team routed Chicago State, 13-0, setting a single-game school record for goals scored and locking up a share of the WAC title in the process.
On a day in which the ‘Roos (12-4-3, 8-1-1) celebrated a class of nine seniors, six of those players either scored or assisted on goals as UMKC ran out to a 7-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
Senior Alyssa Elver had a career day, scoring the Kangaroos’ first three goals at 3’, 13’, and 17’. The Overland Park, Kan., native finished with a school-record four goals on five shots. In addition to Elver’s offensive contributions, Lauren Zach (33’), Nikki Lynch (34’), Whitney Lucas (37’), Kara Priest (44’), Klorissa Kavan (47’), Emily Herndon (48’), Hannah Chadick (60’), and Sophie Rackham (64’ and 66’) all scored for UMKC – a total of nine different scorers which is also a school record. Kavan’s goal was the first of the senior’s career.
Goalkeeper Nina Tzianos recorded the 19th shutout of her career without ever being forced to make a save. The goose egg is the seventh of the season for Tzianos and the ‘Roos.
UMKC outscored its opponents 54-14 during the regular season, including a 21-0 aggregate over the weekend – both are easily program marks for scoring deferential and total goals scored over the respective spans.
By sweeping the season series with the Cougars, the Kangaroos secured a first round bye in next week’s WAC Championship, where the ‘Roos will be the No. 2 overall seed and face the winner of Utah Valley/Texas-Pan American on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. (CST).
